Forgiveness

How to forgive others as Christ forgave you, and why unforgiveness is a chain that binds you, not them.

Key Scripture

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

2 Corinthians 5:17

Forgiveness is the most liberating force available to you. It is not weakness. It is not pretending the hurt did not happen. Forgiveness is releasing a debt. It is saying that person no longer owes you. And it is the only path to real freedom.

You Have Been Forgiven Much

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Colossians 3:13

Jesus forgave you while you were still in rebellion against Him. He did not wait for you to become worthy. He forgave you at infinite cost to Himself. That is the measure by which you are to forgive others. Not because they deserve it. Not because you feel like it. Because you have been forgiven.

Jesus Takes Forgiveness Seriously

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 6:14-15

Jesus treats forgiveness with great seriousness, and Matthew 6:14-15 should not be softened. At the same time, Scripture does not describe unforgiveness as a mechanical spiritual law or teach that an abused person must restore trust or reconciliation in order to receive grace. Believers are called to forgive, release personal vengeance to God, pursue repentance and mercy, and maintain wise boundaries and safety where needed.

Forgiveness Does Not Mean Trust

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

Proverbs 27:12

You can forgive someone and still maintain healthy boundaries. Forgiveness is about releasing the debt, not about trusting them again immediately. Wisdom says discern who has proven trustworthy. Forgiveness says I release the bitterness and the demand for payment. These are not contradictory.

Prayer

Father, help me obey Your call to forgive without denying what happened or abandoning truth, justice, or safety. I release personal vengeance to You and ask You to keep bitterness from ruling my heart. Give me wisdom about boundaries, accountability, restitution, and whether reconciliation is safe and appropriate. Help me extend mercy as one who has received mercy in Christ. In Jesus' name, amen.

Scripture Memory

"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another... even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."

Colossians 3:13

Learning Objectives

  • •State the biblical standard for forgiving others according to Colossians 3:13.
  • •Explain what Scripture says about bitterness and unforgiveness, and why forgiveness matters for Christian discipleship.
  • •Distinguish forgiveness from restored trust.

Historical & Literary Context

Colossians was written to a young church facing false teaching, where Paul roots practical instructions like forgiveness directly in the supremacy of Christ. Matthew 6:14-15 sits inside the Sermon on the Mount, immediately after the Lord's Prayer, tying forgiveness of others directly to a right relationship with the Father.

Knowledge Checkpoint

1. What is the biblical measure for how believers are to forgive others, according to Colossians 3:13?

2. Does forgiving someone according to Scripture require immediately trusting them again?

Practical Application Assignment

Identify one person you have been withholding forgiveness from. This week, take a concrete step, in prayer or in person if appropriate, to release that debt before God.
