Breaking with the Occult: Turning from Darkness to Christ
A Scripture-first study on Acts 19:18-20, Deuteronomy 18:9-14, Leviticus 19:31, 1 Samuel 28, Acts 8:9-24, Acts 16:16-18, and 1 Corinthians 10:14-22. Teaching decisive turning away from divination, sorcery, mediums, spiritism, magic practices, and idolatry toward Jesus Christ. Confession, renunciation, and destruction of occult objects. No sensationalism. No occult techniques taught.
Scripture is clear that occult practices are contrary to God's will and that believers must turn from them decisively. The occult is not a neutral cultural practice. It is spiritual rebellion against God, seeking power, knowledge, or guidance from sources other than Him. This study examines what Scripture says about the occult, why it is dangerous, and how believers are to break with it completely and turn to Jesus Christ. The goal is not fascination with the occult but decisive turning away from it toward the light of Christ.
Key Scripture
And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
Acts 19:18-20 (KJV)
Context
Paul had been ministering in Ephesus for about two years. God was performing extraordinary miracles through him, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons touched by Paul were taken to the sick, and diseases and evil spirits left them (Acts 19:11-12). Some Jewish exorcists tried to use the name of Jesus as a formula, and the result was a public demonstration that the name of Jesus is not a magic charm to be used by those who do not know Him (Acts 19:13-16).
In the wake of these events, many believers came and confessed their deeds. Those who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls and burned them publicly. The value was enormous: fifty thousand pieces of silver. The word of God grew mightily and prevailed. This is the biblical model for breaking with the occult: confession, renunciation, and the destruction of the objects associated with the practices.
Read Acts 19:11-20, Deuteronomy 18:9-14, Leviticus 19:31, 1 Samuel 28:3-25, Acts 8:9-24, Acts 16:16-18, and 1 Corinthians 10:14-22 before working through this study.
What Scripture Clearly Says
God Prohibits Occult Practices
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV)
God explicitly prohibits occult practices. The list in Deuteronomy 18 includes divination, sorcery, witchcraft, consulting familiar spirits, wizardry, necromancy, and other practices. God calls these things an abomination. They are not neutral. They are not harmless. They are spiritual rebellion against God, seeking power, knowledge, or guidance from sources other than Him.
The New Testament continues this prohibition. Paul includes sorcery, witchcraft, and idolatry in the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-20). The Book of Revelation says that sorcerers will be outside the holy city (Revelation 22:15). The biblical witness is consistent from beginning to end: occult practices are contrary to God's will and must be turned from completely.
Occult Practices Include Various Forms
The biblical prohibitions cover a range of practices, including:
- 1
Divination: seeking knowledge of the future or hidden things through means other than God. This includes astrology, horoscopes, tarot cards, palm reading, crystal balls, and other forms of fortune-telling.
- 2
Sorcery and witchcraft: seeking to manipulate people, circumstances, or spiritual forces through rituals, spells, or potions.
- 3
Mediums and spiritism: seeking to communicate with the dead or with familiar spirits. This includes seances, channeling, and consulting mediums.
- 4
Magic practices: seeking power through magical rituals, amulets, charms, or incantations.
- 5
Idolatry: worshiping or serving anything other than God, including the spiritual forces that may be behind idols (1 Corinthians 10:20).
Modern forms of occult practice may include New Age spirituality, energy healing that invokes spiritual forces, law of attraction teachings that treat the universe as a power source, manifesting rituals, and various forms of spiritual practice that seek power or guidance from sources other than the God of Scripture. The biblical principle applies to all of these: seek God, not alternative spiritual sources.
The Biblical Response: Confession, Renunciation, and Destruction
And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men.
Acts 19:18-19 (KJV)
The Ephesian believers provide the biblical model. They confessed what they had done. They showed their deeds. They brought their occult books and burned them publicly. This was a decisive, costly, public break with the occult. They did not keep the books as souvenirs. They did not sell them. They destroyed them. The cost was significant: fifty thousand pieces of silver. But the freedom was worth far more.
This is the pattern for breaking with the occult. Confess what you have done. Renounce the practices. Destroy the objects associated with them. This is not a formula. It is a genuine turning from darkness to light, from the occult to Christ.
Occult Involvement Creates Spiritual Bondage
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
1 Corinthians 10:20 (KJV)
Paul says that the things sacrificed by Gentiles are sacrificed to demons, not to God. He warns believers not to have fellowship with demons. Occult practices are not neutral. They involve contact with spiritual forces that are opposed to God. This contact creates spiritual bondage. The person who practices the occult opens themselves to spiritual influences that are not from God and that can enslave them.
This is why the break must be decisive. Occult involvement is not a casual hobby that can be set aside gradually. It is a spiritual door that must be closed completely. The objects must be destroyed. The practices must be renounced. The person must turn fully to Christ.
Biblical Discernment
The biblical approach to the occult is not fascination but turning away. Scripture does not provide detailed descriptions of occult practices that could teach someone how to practice them. It prohibits them, warns about their danger, and calls for decisive repentance. The believer should not study the occult out of curiosity. The believer should study God's Word, grow in the knowledge of Christ, and turn from the occult completely.
The believer who has been involved in the occult should not live in fear. Christ has defeated the powers of darkness (Colossians 2:15). The believer who turns to Christ, confesses, renounces, and destroys the objects is free. The past is forgiven. The bondage is broken. The future is in Christ.
What Scripture Does Not Establish
Scripture does not teach that every problem a person faces after occult involvement is caused by the occult. Some problems are the flesh, some are ordinary life in a fallen world, and some may be spiritual. Discernment is needed. The believer who has broken with the occult should not attribute every struggle to past occult involvement.
Scripture does not prescribe a specific formula for breaking with the occult. The Ephesian believers confessed, renounced, and destroyed. These are the biblical elements, but they are not a ritual. They are expressions of genuine repentance and turning to Christ.
Scripture does not teach that believers should study the occult to understand it. The biblical instruction is to turn from it, not to study it. Fascination with the occult, even for the purpose of understanding it, is not biblical. The believer's focus should be on Christ, not on the darkness.
Practical Application
If you have been involved in the occult, confess it to God. Be honest about what you have done. Do not minimize it. Do not hide it. Bring it into the light. Confession is the first step toward freedom.
Renounce the practices. Turn from them. Commit to never returning to them. Renunciation is not a formula but a genuine decision to leave the occult behind and follow Christ.
Destroy the objects. If you have occult books, charms, amulets, tarot cards, crystals used for spiritual purposes, or any objects associated with occult practices, destroy them. Do not keep them. Do not sell them. Do not give them away. Destroy them, as the Ephesian believers did.
Turn fully to Christ. The goal is not merely to stop a former practice but to grow in ordinary Christian discipleship: abide in Christ, read Scripture, pray, worship, and remain in fellowship with believers. Do these things because they are the normal life of following Jesus, not as a technique for keeping spiritual danger away.
Do not live in fear. Christ has defeated the powers of darkness. You are free in Him. Do not look back. Do not be afraid. Walk forward in the freedom and the light of Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Prayer
Father, I confess my involvement in occult practices and bring it into the light. I turn from every practice that sought spiritual power, knowledge, or guidance apart from You. Give me wisdom to remove materials I should no longer use and to break with habits that pull me back toward the occult. I turn fully to Jesus Christ and trust His finished work and cleansing. Teach me to seek wisdom from You, remain grounded in Scripture, pray, worship, walk by the Spirit, and stay connected to Your people.
