Divination — Many Ministers Are Practicing This Witchcraft
Recognizing divination in modern ministry.
Divination is the attempt to gain hidden knowledge or foretell the future through occult means rather than through God. Scripture condemns every form of it — not because God withholds good gifts, but because divination turns the heart away from the living God and toward spiritual sources that are not Him. This study examines what Scripture says about divination, why it is spiritually dangerous, and how those who have been involved can turn back to God.
Key Scripture
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (KJV)
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God. And Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
Acts 16:16-18 (KJV)
Biblical Context
Deuteronomy 18 is the most comprehensive Old Testament passage condemning divination and all related practices. God lists them — divination, soothsaying, enchanting, witchcraft, charming, consulting familiar spirits, wizardry, and necromancy — and calls them all an abomination. These were the practices of the nations God was driving out before Israel. They were not neutral cultural customs; they were spiritual rebellion against God's lordship.
Acts 16 records a real encounter in Philippi. A slave girl had a spirit of divination — literally, in the Greek, 'a spirit of Python' — and brought her owners profit through fortune-telling. Paul did not dismiss her as a fraud. He recognized genuine spiritual oppression and dealt with it directly: he commanded the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ. The spirit left. This passage affirms both the reality of spirits associated with divination and Christ's authority over them.
What Scripture Clearly Says
Scripture is clear on several points. First, divination is spiritually real. It is not merely superstition or entertainment. Acts 16 shows that a spirit can be genuinely involved. Second, divination is rebellion against God. It seeks knowledge and guidance from sources other than God, turning the heart toward those sources and away from Him. Third, Christ has authority over every spirit associated with divination. Paul did not need a formula; he acted in the name of Jesus, and the spirit obeyed.
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.
Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Isaiah 8:19-20 (KJV)
What Scripture Does Not Establish
Scripture does not provide a taxonomy of named divination demons to be cast out one by one. It does not teach that every person who has ever consulted a psychic needs a specific deliverance procedure with named spirits. It does not teach that certain words must be spoken to 'close doors' or that curses must be 'broken' through a formula. While the reality of spiritual oppression through occult involvement is biblical, the elaborate systems some modern ministries have built around it go beyond what Scripture establishes.
The biblical response to involvement in divination is straightforward: repent, turn from it, renounce it, trust in Christ, submit to God, and walk in truth. Where genuine spiritual oppression persists, believers can pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who has all authority. But the focus is always on Christ and His finished work, not on a procedure.
Forms of Divination Today
Divination takes many forms in the modern world: fortune-telling, tarot cards, astrology and horoscopes, palm reading, Ouija boards, séances, consulting psychics or mediums, automatic writing, crystal ball gazing, numerology, pendulum dowsing, and many others. The specific method does not matter. The spiritual issue is the same: seeking hidden knowledge or guidance from a source other than God.
Some of these practices may seem harmless or entertaining. Scripture does not treat them that way. They are all part of the same category that Deuteronomy 18 calls an abomination. Even curiosity-driven participation turns the heart toward spiritual sources that oppose God.
Turning Back to God
And many that had believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
Acts 19:18-19 (KJV)
Acts 19 shows the biblical response. Believers in Ephesus who had practiced sorcery confessed it openly and brought their scrolls to be burned publicly. They did not just feel sorry; they acted. They turned from their former practices and destroyed the materials associated with them. This is repentance — a change of mind that results in a change of direction.
- 1
Confess your involvement in divination honestly before God. Name it specifically.
- 2
Repent — turn from it as a change of direction, not just a feeling of regret.
- 3
Renounce it — verbally release any hold it has had on your life.
- 4
Remove and destroy materials associated with occult practice, as the Ephesians did.
- 5
Turn to Christ — trust Him as your Lord, your guide, and your source of truth.
- 6
Submit to God and resist the devil (James 4:7). Stand in Christ's authority, not your own.
- 7
Renew your mind with Scripture, replacing occult thinking with God's truth.
- 8
If you sense ongoing spiritual oppression, pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Where there is genuine demonic involvement, Christ's name has all authority.
Application
If you have been involved in any form of divination — even casually — do not minimize it. Bring it honestly to God. Confess it. Turn from it. Remove any materials associated with it. Trust Christ, who has disarmed every spiritual power at the cross (Colossians 2:15). Fill the space that divination occupied with Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with God's people. The God who forbids divination promises to give wisdom generously to those who ask Him (James 1:5). You do not need a hidden source. You have a Father who hears, guides, and leads in truth.
Reflection Questions
- 1
Have you ever participated in any form of divination — even casually or out of curiosity? What was it?
- 2
Why does God take divination so seriously? What does seeking hidden knowledge from other sources say about the heart?
- 3
What would genuine repentance look like for you? Are there materials you need to remove?
- 4
How can you replace the desire for hidden knowledge with trust in God's sufficient guidance through His Word and His Spirit?
Prayer
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have sought knowledge and guidance from sources other than You. I repent of every involvement in divination — fortune-telling, astrology, horoscopes, tarot, psychics, or any other occult practice. I turn from it now. I renounce it. I remove and destroy any materials associated with it. I trust in Jesus Christ, who has disarmed every spiritual power at the cross. I submit myself to You and I resist the enemy, trusting Your promise that he will flee. Fill me with Your Spirit. Guide me through Your Word. Be my wisdom, my guide, and my truth. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
