Caleb
Wholly Followed the LordThe spy whose unwavering faith and vigor were rewarded with his own inheritance at eighty-five
"But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereunto he went."
Numbers 14:24 (KJV)
Overview
Caleb, of the tribe of Judah, was one of the twelve spies sent to scout Canaan and, together with Joshua, gave a faithful minority report urging Israel to trust God and take the land. Because of his wholehearted faith, God promised Caleb he alone of his generation, besides Joshua, would enter the promised land. Forty-five years later, at eighty-five years old, Caleb requested and received the hill country he had scouted decades before, still declaring himself as strong as he was in his youth.
Gospel Connection
Caleb's wholehearted faith, contrasted against an entire generation's unbelief, echoes the New Testament call to persevere in genuine faith rather than falling away, as Hebrews 3:16-19 uses the wilderness generation's unbelief as a direct warning to believers. Caleb's reward, entering the promised inheritance because he 'followed the Lord fully,' pictures the full inheritance believers receive in Christ, not through partial or half-hearted faith but through wholehearted trust in God's promises, sustained to the very end.
