Scripture

What the Bible claims about itself: its inspiration, authority, and sufficiency for faith and life.

Overview

This doctrine examines what the Bible claims about itself: that it is God-breathed, authoritative, and sufficient for faith and life, the foundation on which every other doctrine in this center rests.

Historical and Literary Context

Scripture was written over roughly 1,500 years by more than 40 human authors across many cultures and circumstances, yet the New Testament writers treat the Old Testament as God's own authoritative word, and Peter places Paul's letters alongside 'the other scriptures' (2 Peter 3:16).

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)

Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Peter 1:20-21 (KJV)

What Scripture Explicitly Says

Scripture explicitly claims to be God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16), produced by men carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21), living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and sufficient to make believers thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17).

Questions Christians Discuss

Common Christian Interpretation

Christians discuss the details of how inspiration relates to the human personality and style of each biblical author, and questions of canon formation across history. Historic orthodox Christianity affirms both full divine inspiration and genuine human authorship together, without contradiction.

Gospel Connection

Scripture's entire storyline points to Jesus Christ (Luke 24:27, John 5:39); it is not merely a rulebook but the record of God's redemptive plan centered on his Son.

Practical Application

Because Scripture is sufficient and authoritative, believers are called to know it deeply (Psalm 119:11), test all teaching against it (Acts 17:11), and let it shape belief and conduct rather than merely personal preference or culture.

Cross References

Psalm 119:105 (KJV) - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. Isaiah 40:8 (KJV) - The word of our God shall stand for ever. Matthew 4:4 (KJV) - Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

How much do you currently let Scripture, rather than culture or feeling, shape your beliefs and decisions?

  2. 2

How does knowing the whole Bible points to Jesus change the way you read the Old Testament?

  3. 3

What would it look like for you to test what you hear taught against Scripture, as the Bereans did?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for your word, breathed out by you and profitable for every part of my life.

Make me a person who loves, knows, and obeys Scripture, and who sees Christ on every page. Amen.
