The Nature of God
Who God is according to Scripture: his holiness, sovereignty, love, and unchanging character.
Overview
Historical and Literary Context
Israel lived among nations that worshipped many limited, capricious gods. Against that background, the revelation of Yahweh as the one true, all-powerful, morally perfect God was radically distinct. The prophets repeatedly contrasted the living God with lifeless idols (Isaiah 44:6-20).
The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.
Exodus 34:6-7 (KJV)
Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
Isaiah 6:3 (KJV)
What Scripture Explicitly Says
Scripture explicitly states that God is spirit (John 4:24), that he does not change (Malachi 3:6), that he knows all things (Psalm 147:5), that he is present everywhere (Psalm 139:7-10), and that he is love (1 John 4:8) while also being a consuming fire toward sin (Hebrews 12:29).
Questions Christians Discuss
Christians have discussed how divine sovereignty relates to human responsibility, and how God's unchanging nature (immutability) relates to passages describing God 'repenting' of an action (Genesis 6:6). Most understand these as accommodated human language describing God's relational response, not an actual change in his eternal character.
Gospel Connection
God's holiness makes the cross necessary; his love makes the cross possible. Romans 3:26 says God is both 'just, and the justifier' of those who believe in Jesus, holding his holiness and love together perfectly in the atonement.
Practical Application
Knowing God's unchanging character gives believers stability in a changing world (Hebrews 13:8), and knowing his holiness shapes reverent worship rather than casual familiarity.
Cross References
Psalm 90:2 (KJV) - God from everlasting to everlasting. Numbers 23:19 (KJV) - God is not a man that he should lie. James 1:17 (KJV) - The Father of lights, with whom is no variableness.
Reflection Questions
- 1
Which attribute of God (holiness, love, sovereignty, omniscience) do you find most comforting right now, and why?
- 2
How does knowing God does not change shape the way you face an unstable season of life?
- 3
How do God's holiness and love work together at the cross rather than against each other?
Prayer
Holy God, you are the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Thank you that your love and your holiness meet perfectly at the cross of Jesus Christ. Teach me to know you as you truly are, not as I imagine you to be. Amen.
