What Is the Gospel?

The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again on the third day, and offers forgiveness and eternal life through faith and repentance.

Key Scripture

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (KJV)

Context

The word 'gospel' means 'good news.' But what is the good news? In the world today, people use the word 'gospel' loosely to mean many things. Some think it means being nice to others. Some think it means social justice. Some think it means following Jesus' teachings. But the Gospel according to Scripture is very specific and very powerful.

The Apostle Paul, writing to the church at Corinth, gives us the clearest definition of the Gospel in all of Scripture. He says that the Gospel consists of four foundational truths: Christ died for our sins, He was buried, He rose again on the third day, and He was seen alive by over 500 witnesses. This is the Gospel. This is the good news that transforms lives and saves souls.

Paul emphasizes that this is not his invention or his opinion. He says 'I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received.' Paul received this Gospel from Jesus Himself and from the apostles before him. The Gospel is the central message of all Scripture. It is the foundation of the Christian faith.

What Does the Bible Say?

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Romans 3:23-26 (KJV)

The Gospel addresses the problem of sin. Everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory. Sin has a payment. Romans 6:23 tells us 'the wages of sin is death.' We all deserve death because of our sin. But God, in His mercy and grace, offers us a solution. That solution is Jesus Christ.

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:4-6 (KJV)

Isaiah foretold the Gospel over 700 years before Jesus came. Jesus bore our griefs and carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The punishment that should have come to us came to Him. He died in our place. This is substitutionary atonement. Jesus took our place.

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 4:25 (KJV)

Jesus was delivered up to death because of our offenses. But He did not stay dead. He was raised again from the dead on the third day. His resurrection proves that His death was a complete payment for sin. By His resurrection He offers us justification. We can be declared righteous before God not because of our works but because of His finished work on the cross.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)

The Gospel is not something to believe in the abstract. It calls for a response. We must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord. We must believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead. When we do, we are saved.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

John 1:12 (KJV)

The Gospel offers us the privilege of becoming children of God. We receive this privilege by receiving Jesus Christ and believing in His name.

Understanding the Passage

The Gospel has four essential components. First, Christ died for our sins. Jesus Christ, who is God in flesh, went to the cross and died. His death was not accidental or unjust. It was deliberate and purposeful. He died to pay the penalty for our sins. He died so that we could be forgiven.

Second, He was buried. This might seem like a strange detail to emphasize, but it is important. His burial proves that He truly died. He was not in a coma. He did not swoon. He was dead. His body was placed in a tomb.

Third, He rose again on the third day. This is the heart of the Gospel. Jesus did not stay dead. He conquered death. He rose from the dead in a physical, resurrected body. Over 500 people saw the risen Jesus. This resurrection validates everything Jesus claimed to be. It proves He is God. It proves His death was a complete payment for sin. It proves that death has no power over Him or those who believe in Him.

Fourth, the Gospel offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who repent and believe. This is grace. We do not earn salvation. We do not deserve it. But God offers it freely to all who will turn from their sin and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

These four elements are not optional or negotiable. They are the Gospel. Any message that denies or minimizes any of these four truths is not the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What This Means Today

The Gospel is the most important message in the world because it addresses the most important question: How can a person be right with God? The answer is the Gospel. We cannot be right with God through our own efforts or goodness. We cannot earn salvation through works or merit. We can only be saved through faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross.

If you have never received Jesus Christ as your Savior, the Gospel is an invitation to you today. God loves you. Jesus died for you. He rose from the dead for you. All you have to do is repent of your sins and believe in Jesus. Confess Him as Lord with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. You will be saved.

If you are already a believer, the Gospel should shape everything in your life. The Gospel is not just a ticket to heaven. It is a foundational truth that transforms how you think, how you live, and how you relate to God. You have been justified by the death and resurrection of Jesus. You are forgiven. You are declared righteous. You are a child of God. This should fill your heart with gratitude and devotion to Jesus.

The Gospel also gives believers confidence when facing spiritual opposition. Through the cross and resurrection, Jesus has triumphed over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. Our confidence is therefore in Christ's victory, not in a personal claim to spiritual power. Believers are called to resist the devil, stand firm in faith, pray, and live under Jesus' lordship.

Finally, the Gospel connects us to a community of believers. We are not alone in our faith. We are joined to all who have received Jesus throughout history. We are part of the body of Christ. The Gospel unites all believers across all denominations and all time periods. This is the church.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

Can you explain the four essential components of the Gospel in your own words? Why is each one important?

  2. 2

Romans 10:9 says we must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead. What does this confession mean to you personally?

  3. 3

How should the fact that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead change the way you live today?

  4. 4

What is the difference between the true Gospel and other messages that claim to be the Gospel but leave out one of the four essential components?

  5. 5

If someone asked you to explain the Gospel in one minute, what would you say?

Prayer

Prayer

Father, thank You for the Gospel. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to this earth. Thank You that He took on flesh, walked among us, and gave His life for my sins. Thank You that He was buried and rose again on the third day. Thank You for the victory He won over death and darkness. Thank You that through faith in Him I can be forgiven and declared righteous before You. Thank You that I am a child of God because of the Gospel. Help me to never take the Gospel for granted. Help me to understand it deeply and live it fully. Help me to proclaim the Gospel to everyone around me who does not yet know Jesus. Help me to see that the Gospel is not just a one-time salvation event but the foundation of everything in my Christian life. Thank You for this good news, this Gospel, that transforms lives and saves souls. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Living the Word

  1. 1

This week, spend 15 minutes daily reading through one of the Gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John). As you read, pay attention to the crucifixion and resurrection accounts. Let these truths sink deep into your heart.

  2. 2

Write down the four essential components of the Gospel (death, burial, resurrection, and the offer of salvation) on a card. Carry this card with you this week. When you have a moment, review it and meditate on what each one means.

  3. 3

Share the Gospel with one person this week. You might use 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 or Romans 10:9-10 to explain it. Be ready to answer any questions they might have.

  4. 4

Spend time in prayer thanking Jesus for the Gospel. Thank Him specifically for His death, burial, and resurrection. Tell Him how grateful you are for salvation through Him.

  5. 5

Think about how the Gospel changes the way you approach spiritual warfare and deliverance. Write down one way that understanding Jesus' victory through the Gospel gives you confidence in your own battles with demonic forces.
