Put Off / Put On: The Biblical Pattern of Renewal
A Scripture-first study on Ephesians 4:17-32 and Colossians 3:1-17. The biblical pattern of transformation: put off the old self, be renewed in the spirit of the mind, put on the new self. Freedom is not merely stopping something but replacing the old with the new. Essential for Path to Freedom.
Biblical freedom is not merely stopping something. It is replacing something. God's Word gives a pattern for transformation that is deeper than behavior modification. Paul describes it as putting off the old self, being renewed in the spirit of the mind, and putting on the new self. This pattern is essential for anyone pursuing lasting freedom in Christ. Renouncing what is wrong is only the beginning. Replacing falsehood with truth, sin with righteousness, and the old life with the new life in Christ is where transformation takes root.
Key Scripture
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote Ephesians to believers who needed to understand both what God had done for them in Christ and how they were now to live. The first three chapters describe the believer's identity in Christ. The last three chapters describe the life that flows from that identity. Ephesians 4:17-32 is part of that practical section, where Paul transitions from doctrine to daily living. He tells believers to stop living like the Gentiles who do not know God and to start living as those who have been taught by Christ.
Colossians 3:1-17 follows a similar pattern. Paul has just told the Colossians that they have died with Christ and been raised with Him. Now he tells them what that means practically. Set your minds on things above. Put to death what is earthly. Put off the old self. Put on the new self. Both passages teach the same pattern: put off, be renewed, put on.
Read Ephesians 4:17-32 and Colossians 3:1-17 in full before working through this study. These passages are not abstract theology. They are practical instruction for daily Christian living.
What Scripture Clearly Says
The Three-Step Pattern
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (KJV)
Paul gives three commands that work together. First, put off the old self. The old self is the former way of life, corrupted by deceitful desires. Second, be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Transformation happens through the renewing of the mind, as God's truth replaces the lies that shaped the old life. Third, put on the new self, created after God in righteousness and true holiness. The new self is not self-improvement. It is a new creation, given by God and lived out by the believer.
All three steps are essential. Putting off without putting on leaves an empty space. Putting on without putting off is hypocrisy. Renewing the mind is what connects the two, as the believer's thinking is transformed by God's truth. This is not a one-time event. It is an ongoing pattern of life.
Specific Examples in Ephesians 4
Paul does not leave the pattern abstract. He gives specific examples of what putting off and putting on looks like:
- 1
Falsehood must be put off and replaced with truth: 'Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour' (Ephesians 4:25).
- 2
Stealing must be put off and replaced with honest work and generosity: 'Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth' (Ephesians 4:28).
- 3
Corrupt speech must be put off and replaced with edifying speech: 'Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers' (Ephesians 4:29).
- 4
Bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, and malice must be put off and replaced with kindness, tenderheartedness, and forgiveness: 'Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you' (Ephesians 4:31-32).
Notice that in each case, Paul does not merely say 'stop doing X.' He says 'stop doing X and start doing Y.' The old behavior is replaced by a new behavior that reflects the character of Christ. This is the biblical pattern of transformation.
Specific Examples in Colossians 3
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.
Colossians 3:8-10 (KJV)
Paul gives a similar list in Colossians 3. Put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy communication. Put off lying. The old self with its deeds is gone. The new self is being renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator. Then Paul describes what to put on:
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Colossians 3:12-14 (KJV)
Put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness, and above all, love. The new self is characterized by the character of Christ, produced by the Holy Spirit. This is not self-effort. It is the life of Christ expressed through the believer who is walking by the Spirit.
The Mind Is the Battleground
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2 (KJV)
The middle step of the pattern, being renewed in the spirit of the mind, is where the real battle takes place. The old self is driven by deceitful desires. The new self is shaped by God's truth. Transformation happens as the mind is renewed, as lies are replaced by truth, as worldly thinking is replaced by godly thinking. This is why Scripture, prayer, and fellowship matter so much. They are the means by which the mind is renewed.
Biblical Discernment
The put off / put on pattern is not a formula. It is not a technique. It is a way of life. Paul is describing the daily rhythm of the believer who has been saved by grace and is now learning to live in a way that reflects that salvation. The pattern requires honesty, repentance, intentionality, and dependence on the Holy Spirit.
This pattern also corrects two common errors. Some focus only on putting off, on stopping sin, without replacing it with anything. The result is an empty life that is vulnerable to relapse. Others focus only on putting on, on doing good things, without dealing with the sin that remains. The result is hypocrisy. Paul calls for both: put off the old, renew the mind, put on the new.
This pattern is essential for the Path to Freedom. Christian growth does not stop at renouncing sin or falsehood. It continues through replacing lies with truth, putting off sinful patterns, putting on Christlike character, renewing the mind, and walking by the Spirit. The emphasis is positive discipleship, not fear of becoming spiritually 'empty.'
What Scripture Does Not Establish
Scripture does not teach that putting off and putting on is a one-time event that permanently solves all struggles. It is an ongoing, daily pattern. The believer will need to put off and put on repeatedly, in different areas, throughout their life. Growth is gradual, not instantaneous.
Scripture does not teach that the old self is still alive in the believer. Paul says the old self has been crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6). What remains is the flesh, the fallen patterns of thinking and behaving that the believer must continually put off. The old self is gone. The flesh remains and must be resisted daily by walking in the Spirit.
Practical Application
Identify what needs to be put off. Ask God to show you areas of your life where the old way of living persists. Be honest. Be specific. Write down what you see.
Find the truth that replaces the lie. For each area where you need to put off, find what Scripture says to put on. If you are putting off lying, put on truth. If you are putting off stealing, put on honest work and generosity. If you are putting off bitterness, put on kindness and forgiveness.
Renew your mind daily. Read Scripture. Pray. Meditate on God's truth. Let His Word shape your thinking. The mind is the battleground, and the weapon is truth.
Practice the new way. Do not just think about it. Act on it. If you have been putting off anger, practice patience today. If you have been putting off lying, practice honesty today. The new self is not just a concept. It is a way of life.
Depend on the Holy Spirit. You cannot put off and put on by willpower alone. The Holy Spirit empowers the believer to live the new life. Yield to Him. Walk by Him. He produces the fruit that the new self bears.
Reflection Questions
- 1
What in your life needs to be put off? Be specific. What old patterns of thinking, speaking, or acting persist?
- 2
For each thing you need to put off, what does Scripture say to put on? What truth replaces the lie? What righteousness replaces the sin?
- 3
How are you renewing your mind? What daily habits help you fill your mind with God's truth?
- 4
Have you been focusing only on putting off, or only on putting on? How does the three-step pattern challenge your approach?
- 5
How does this pattern change your understanding of freedom? Freedom is not just stopping something. It is starting something new. What would that look like in your life?
Prayer
Prayer
Father, thank You that in Christ I am a new creation. Thank You that the old self has been crucified with Him and the new self has been created in righteousness and true holiness. Help me to put off the old way of living. Help me to be renewed in the spirit of my mind. Help me to put on the new self, created after Your image. Show me specifically what needs to be put off in my life. Give me the truth that replaces every lie. Give me the righteousness that replaces every sin. Empower me by Your Holy Spirit to live the new life, not by my own strength but by Yours. Let my life increasingly reflect the character of Jesus Christ. In His name. Amen.
Walking It Out
- 1
This week, read Ephesians 4:17-32 and Colossians 3:1-17 each day. Let the specific examples of putting off and putting on shape your prayers and your choices.
- 2
Choose one area where you need to put off. Write down what you are putting off and what Scripture says to put on. Practice the new way this week.
- 3
Commit to renewing your mind daily. Set aside time each day for Scripture reading and prayer. Let God's truth shape your thinking.
- 4
When you catch yourself falling back into an old pattern, do not just stop. Replace. Put off the old behavior and immediately put on the new. Practice this throughout the week.
- 5
At the end of each day, reflect: What did I put off today? What did I put on? Where did I need to renew my mind? Bring both victories and failures to God in prayer.
