Science and Faith

How Christians think about science, creation, and the relationship between faith and the natural world.

Overview

This study examines how Christians think about the relationship between science and biblical faith, showing that properly understood, they are not enemies but complementary ways of exploring God's world and his word.

Historical and Literary Context

Many founders of modern science, including Kepler, Newton, and Boyle, were devout believers who saw their scientific work as tracing the orderly handiwork of a rational Creator (Psalm 19:1). The idea of inherent conflict between science and faith is a relatively modern narrative, not the historical norm for most of the scientific revolution.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (KJV)

By him were all things created... and by him all things consist.

Colossians 1:16-17 (KJV)

What Scripture Explicitly Says

Scripture explicitly affirms that God created the universe (Genesis 1:1), that he sustains it moment by moment (Colossians 1:17), and that the created order reliably displays consistent order worth studying (Jeremiah 33:25), the very assumption science itself depends on.

Questions Christians Discuss

Common Christian Interpretation

Faithful, Bible-believing Christians hold differing views on the age of the earth and the precise mechanisms of creation, including young-earth, old-earth, and evolutionary creationist positions, while affirming together that God is the intentional Creator and that Genesis is true revelation, not merely ancient mythology borrowed from surrounding cultures. This app presents these as areas of genuine, ongoing discussion among believers who share a high view of Scripture.

Gospel Connection

The same God who ordered creation with wisdom and power (Proverbs 8:22-31) is the God who entered his creation in Jesus Christ to redeem it (Colossians 1:20). Scientific wonder at creation's design can become worship of the Creator himself rather than an end in itself.

Practical Application

Believers who study or work in scientific fields can do so as an act of worship, exploring God's world carefully, honestly, and without fear that genuine discovery threatens genuine faith.

Cross References

Jeremiah 33:25 (KJV) - If my covenant be not with day and night... Job 38:4-7 (KJV) - Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Psalm 104:24 (KJV) - O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all.

Reflection Questions

  1. 1

How does viewing scientific study as an act of worship change your posture toward it?

  2. 2

Why is it historically inaccurate to assume science and Christian faith have always been in conflict?

  3. 3

How can you discuss differing Christian views on creation with humility rather than division?

Prayer

Creator God, thank you for a universe that displays your wisdom and power in every detail.

Help me approach science with wonder rather than fear, and help me hold differing views among believers with humility and unity in Christ. Amen.
